CHATTANOOGA DEFEATS WALTERS FOR 2017 REGION CHAMPIONSHIP

The Chattanooga State Lady Tigers went an extra game, but was able to stave off the Lady Senators of Walters State for the 2017 TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII Softball Championship held at the softball complex at Volunteer State Community College.  

Their trip to the championship started by defeating Dyersburg State 6-3 in the first round in eight innings.  Kaleigh Wynne and Courtney Condon each hit a home run in the win with Condon's shot driving in the winning runs.

In the winner's semis they met Columbia State who they had split with during the regular season.  With the score tied at four, the Lady Tigers took the lead in the fifth inning on back to back doubles by Alaeni Ray and Wynne.  They held on for the 5-4 victory.

In the winners' bracket final, Chattanooga would secure a 5-3 victory over Walters when Wynne and Devan Brown each hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning.  Wynne would have three hits in the game.

After Walters defeated Volunteer in the loser's bracket final, Walters would fight for a 3-2 win in the first championship game on the strength of a three run home run by Jordan Fortel.  Wynne had given Chattanooga a 1-0 lead on her third home run of the tournament.  After Fortel's home run, the Lady Tigers closed the gap on consecutive hits by Madison Kurtz, Wynne, and Brown.

In the final game, a 6-4 Lady Tiger win,both teams scratched out runs in the first inning.  Walters would take a 3-1 lead in the third on a walk and an error combined with hits by Vanessa Elliot and Shelby Shanks.  Chattanooga would tie the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings as Lillie McCrary and Wynne would each have run scoring hits.

In the sixth inning, the Lady Tigers would put up three runs.  McCrary would lead off with a solo shot over the right field fence.  Singles by Jennah McEleheney, Alyssia Bowen, and Kurtz would score two more runs for a 6-3 lead.  Walters would score in asingle run as they loaded the bases with no outs, but only a walk to Fortel would plate the run.

Wynne pitched all three games against Walters in the tournament.  She would throw 21 innings, surrendering 17 hits with 17 strikeouts.  She walked 16 batters, but 10 were given to Fortel.
