The Lqady Senators of Walters and the Lady Raiders of Roane had "one for the ages" on Tuesday afternoon as Walters secured the automatic bid to the NJCAA National Tournament. College basketball is a 40 minute game, but on this day, it took 55 to minutes to find the victor. Holding a 12 point lead going into the fourth quarter, Walters watched Roane outscore them 18-6 as at the end of regulation the score was knotted at 54. Both teams struggled to in the first OT as it ended tied at 58. In the 2nd extra session, the scoring improved but it still was even at 67 at the buzzer. The Lady Senators finally prevailed in the third OT, but the Lady Raiders didn't make it easy.
The Lady Senators began their trip to the titale on Sunday as they took a 54-45 quarterfinal win over Motlow. The cruised in their 65-44 semifianl win over Cleveland on Monday. The Lady Raiders had the longer trip to the finals. Seeded 7th going into play, they defeated Jackson 67-45 in one of the playin games on Friday. They upset the #2 seed Southwest Tennessee 70-53 in a Sunday quarterfinal, and love playing extra basketball so much they defeated #3 seed Chattanooga 41-40 in OT in the other Monday semifinal.
In Walters win over Motlow, Sara Vujcacic led the way with 17 points, Oneisha Turner had 12, and Gazzmyne Herndon had 10. In their win over Cleveland, Vujacic totaled 17 points again, Herndon and Turner both finished with eight. In the championship game, Vujacic was again the leader with 25 points, Turner had 16, and Herndon finished with ten.
For her accomplishments, Vujacic was named the MVP of the tournament.
