SENATORS PREVAIL IN OPENING ROUND OVER SOUTH GEORGIA
The Walters State Senators built a nine [point lead by the half, and advanced to the second round of the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship by defeating South Georgia State 93-84. The win imprves the team's overall record to 31-1 on the season.
Walters came out to take a quick 10-1 lead at the beginning of the game. South Georgia would come back ech time the Senators took a solid lead. With 2:16 left in the first half and Walters clinging to a 37-36 lead, they would go on an 8-2 run to close out the half and lead 45-36 at the break.
South Georgia would fight back in the second half and take a brief lead with 12 minutes to play at 60-58. Walters would take the lead back a minute later on a three point shot from Carter Webb. It was a lead that the Senators would never relinquish as they built as much as ten-point lead down the stretch.
The Senators had four players reach double figures led by Taquez Butler with 22 points. Webb and Brian Carter both came off the bench with 17 and 15 points. The Walters bench outscored their opponents 46-30. Da'Mori Lytch finished with 13 points.
Lytch led the team with ten rebounds for a double-double. Butler and Carter each had six boards while Tyrese Stovall finished the contest with five caroms.
Butler led with six assists while Jamar Livingston dished out four and Carter had three in the game. Livingston also had two steals in the contest. Stovall had three blocks on the day to lead the team.
Next up for Walters is the #7 seed Midland College. That game is scheduled for 3:30pm EDT on Tuesday, March 24.
Midland has a record of 27-6 and recieved an at-large bid for the tournament. They are a representative of NJCAA Region V, and was the runner-up in the Southwest District Championship.
